It's important to ensure that your crystals are cleaned properly before use. Find out why and how this is done.
What is cleansing?
Cleansing when you “clean” your crystals. It is not the same as cleaning with soap and water. Crystals need to be cleaned carefully and in the right way.
Why do I need to cleanse my crystals?
When we use crystals they take on negative energies and they need to be cleared of these energies in order to work well for us again.
After cleansing your crystals you will need to re-energise them for use. Re-energising your crystals will tune them into your own frequency and your own intentions for healing.
After the crystal as re-energised, it will have strengthened its healing power and work at its maximum efficiency for us.
When do I need to cleanse my crystals?
Crystals need to be cleaned when you first buy them. Any negative energies from packaging, transport and handling may be stored in the crystal and passed on to you.
Cleansing is also required after they have been worn or if they have been used for healing.
Do all crystals need cleansing?
Most crystals do need cleansing but there are a few that are self-cleaning. These crystals are Citrine, Kyanite and Azeztulite. Of course, cleansing won’t do any harm to them but it is not necessary.
How do I cleanse my crystals?
There are many ways to cleanse crystals, some crystals prefer charging in the sun, others the moon. Some crystals can get damaged if soaked in water so check the preferred method for your crystal in our Crystal A-Z guide.
Cleansing with other crystals
Clear Quartz, Carnelian and Selenite cleanse other crystals.
Another way is to place your crystals on a piece of Quartz, Carnelian or Selenite overnight. this will also have the same effect.
Cleansing in saltwater
Rinse or soak your crystal in water from the sea, a river or lake. If this is not possible you can make your own mix from sea or rock salt. You may leave them to soak for anywhere between one to twenty-four hours.
It’s important to note that crystals may lose shine and appear dull after exposure to salt. And never use the salty water that the crystals have bathed in. It contains negative and unwanted energies that we could take in.
NOTE: Some crystals can get damaged by water or any other liquid. Examples of these are Calcite, Carnelian, Galena, Halite, Hematite, Labradorite, Lepidolite, Lodestone, Malachite, Mica, Moldavite, Muscovite, Opals, Pearls, Pyrite, Selenite, Turquoise, Obsidian, and Ulexite.
Cleansing with smudge sticks
Burn a sage smudge stick and wave it back and forth underneath the crystal for 20 to 30 seconds.
Cleansing using the earth
Bury your crystal for at least a day up to several months, preferably in pure, clean soil. Place them in a cloth bag so that they don't get dirty. Small traces of dirt can be brushed off afterwards.
Cleansing with visualisation
With your hands in a prayer position, hold your crystal. Visualise a bright light surrounding the crystal dissolving all the negative energy. This only needs to be done for 30 seconds to a couple of minutes.
How do I re-energise my crystals?
After cleaning your crystal of negative energy you have to then re-energise them to restore its natural energy for healing again. There are several ways this can be done.
Re-energising in the sunlight
Place the crystals in the sun for a few hours or all day.
If you are leaving your crystals on a windowsill please take care as the sunlight focused through a crystal can sometimes cause a fire hazard.
NOTE: Some crystals can fade in the sun. Examples of these are Amethyst, Citrine, Ametrine, Quartz varieties, Aquamarine, Celestite, Fluorite, Sapphire, Opal, Kunzite, Turquoise and Topaz.
Re-energising in the moonlight
Place the crystals in the light of the moon for a few hours or overnight is fine. A full moon works best.
Your crystals do not have to be in direct moonlight nor will it not charge if it’s a cloudy night. The moon’s energy is always there. But saying that, if you can place them in the direct moonlight it would give them an added advantage.
